The Mission of Help
The Charity was founded in 1894 by two ladies, Miss Perram and Miss Craig to provide relief for the 'suffering poor irrespective of creed, colour or financial means'.
In the early days this consisted of providing financial assistance, clothing and food to deserving people who had fallen on hard times, were ill or simply needed help. In addition, the Charity operated a Home in the London suburbs to provide what we today call 'respite care'.
In the 1930's the Charity closed its London Home and opened a Home at Westcliff-on-Sea. This was to provide deserving people with respite care by the seaside, a real holiday in those days. During World
War Two the residents were evacuated to Goat Hall at Galleywood near Chelmsford.
This work continued until 1946 when, with the introduction of the Welfare State, the Charity decided to sell its existing premises and to purchase one large house with extensive gardens so that permanent residential care could be provided. Thus St. Martin's was founded and is the only operational arm of the Charity remaining today.
Today the sole efforts of the Charity are the continuing provision of permanent and respite care for the elderly.
