News and Events

February 2012

St Martin's currently has vacancies for residents. For further information please contact the Manager, Ms S. Field, on 01702-475891.

September 2011

On 10th of September 8 volunteers from the NatWest Bank spent 2 hours gardening at St Martin's. They then moved on to painting the summer house but, in typical British fashion, rain stopped play and they had to finish early. Nevertheless the front of the summer house now has a new coat of paint. Click here to read a report about this event from the 11th October edition of the Leigh Times.

April 2011

Royal Wedding. On 29th April St Martin's celebrated the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton. This took the form of a buffet consisting of a variety of sandwiches followed by cake fancies (patriotically decorated in red, white and blue), jelly and fruit and finally a slice of a 3 tier wedding cake. This was all washed down with a glass of red wine.

We have recently been inspected under the National Food Hygiene Rating System. We are please to announce that we were awarded a score of 5 which denotes a "very good" standard of food hygiene.

On the 20th of the month Eastwood Chorale made another of their frequent visits to St Martin's. They performed a selection of old time tunes including a Vera Lynn medley, as well as transatlantic favourites (or should that be favorites!) by George Gershwin and Cole Porter.

January 2011

As the year begins a long planned building project is finally getting underway. The fire staircase is being replaced and a new bathroom is also being built. Financing for this project is as a result of more than a years fundraising efforts and we are very grateful to the individuals and to the Charitable Trusts who contributed.

September 2010

On the 28th of the month CND Sounds were the featured entertainment. The 2 members of the group sang a variety of songs, mainly from the 1960s, accompanied by drums and guitar. The residents also had the chance to sing for their supper as it were due to the fact that instruments were distributed so they could join in with the  performance.

June 2010

On 22nd June the residents were entertained by singer Diana Moore who presented her war-time show of 1940s hits.

Top Care Award for St Martin's

St Martin's has recently been awarded a 3 star rating (Excellent Quality Outcomes) by the Care Quality Commission.

Southend's Mayor Brian Smith and his wife attended an event at the home on 26 November to celebrate this achievement which followed an earlier in-depth inspection by the Commission.

The inspection covered a wide range of activities and the Commission made particular mention of the high standards of medication administration, activities for residents and meeting the needs of residents with dementia.

The Mayor congratulated the home and staff in this achievement and the manager Sue Field thanked all staff at St Martins for their efforts and committment which are reflected in this award.
